Picked up Injustice: Gods Among Us last night. Fun, beautiful and well crafted story.

But…

All the men have relatively realistic fighting stances and are fun to play but the women just pose like they’re on a photo shoot for Maxim. Don’t get me started on their proportions. And Wonder Woman, for me, is the worst fighter. It’s frakking Wonder Woman!!!

Four things nobody tells you about planning a wedding

So, I got married at the end of March. Hold your applause, this isn’t that kind of article. It’s been a little over a year in planning and, even given all that time, it hasn’t been easy. And, quite honestly, I was amazed about what I learned during the process.

Now, as a disclaimer, I’m just going to write this about the people who are doing even a semi-traditional wedding. I’m not talking to all the people who are doing the courtroom thing or a small ceremony in your back yard officiated by you uncle’s cousin’s niece’s family friend for $5 with ironic BBQ and PBR afterwards.

I also wanted to get that out of the way early but know full well at least one of you Mensa candidates will skip over the introduction and go onto the comments and wax on about how you don’t need all that for a wedding. Yes, I know it can be done for cheap, yes I know it doesn’t have to be complicated. Guess what. Most people want something at least a little more complicated than “I do” in front of a Judge. So fuck off and go back to churning butter and skinning raccoons for mittens or whatever it is you do in your spare time to save money.

Anyway, onward to crushing the absurd fantasies about your perfect day!

#1: However much you think you’ll spend, you’ll spend more

The Perception

You can have exactly the wedding you want and you don’t need to worry about the cost. There will always be a vendor or a venue or a DJ who is willing to accommodate your budget. You simply don’t have to compromise or break the bank.

The Reality

When my fiancée and I set out planning this shindig we set a limit. We were REALLY wanting to keep it around $15. Now, that sounds like a lot. Hell, it still does. And that’s about what I would have expected to spend

Just last year, you could have expected to pay around $28,000. That’s average. Some parts of the country it’s way more. For a single day of your life, you will be expect to pay about as much as something you’d take out a small loan for. Perhaps to a guy with an Italian last name, large questionable associates who never speak and a time in their life when they can’t account for their own whereabouts in a court of law.

So, clearly, our $15,000 budget was off. The venue alone was 12 grand. 12!!

To be fair, we did a number of things to cut down the cost. We’re having our wedding on the last day of the “off” season, got cupcakes instead of a full cake and had a buffet instead of a sit-down meal. But the ending cost was still around 5k more than what we expected. And that was still under the national average by eight thousand dollars.

#2: You WILL piss someone off

The Perception

Everyone is there for you, to see you and be with you on your special day. You’re the center of attention and everyone will be totally OK with whatever you decide to do.

The Reality

What bullshit. I mean, ostensibly it is just about you but the thing is, we’re human. And humans are assholes.

OK, maybe not assholes, but we want to live vicariously through our friends and family sometimes. And, sometimes, that means butting into a business that we have no reason to be in.

Ever get a group of about 10 people into the same room to decide on something important? Think about work. How should we code this feature? What vender should we use for this project? What parts should we order for this new contract? Who should we lay off? Hell, just “What should we have for lunch” can be an ordeal rivaling World War I in its scope.

My point? Imagine about 100 people all wanting some kind of input into your one single day that was “supposed” to be all about you two.

Mom and Dad want the bride to wear white. She wants to wear Pearl or some other color that, for the life of me, I don’t know why it’s not called white.

Your brothers and/or sisters want a big party with lots ‘o free booze. And, presumably, someone else hot and single in the wedding party to hook up with.

Your spouse probably doesn’t want anybody actin’ the fool too much which puts a damper on your siblings’ plans.

Your little cousin wants to be the flower girl and, by heaven, she WILL wear her Wonder Woman Onesie. Actually, I can’t blame her for that. That’s kinda awesome.

Your aunt wants to do the reading.

Your uncle wants to give a drunken toast at the reception.

And WHY didn’t you have a religious ceremony?

Here’s the thing: you can’t please all of them. Literally can’t because some of them are in direct opposition. Even if you could, you’d go crazy just in the attempt.

So, make it easier on yourself and stop trying. Be a little bit of an asshole on the one day you’re allowed.

#3: Even if it’s just a courthouse wedding, you have to pay for it

The Perception

Go to the court house. Sign a document. Say some words. Walk out eternally bound to your loved one. What could be simpler?

The Reality

You have to pay for that shit. It’s $64 in my state so it’s not terribly much. And Weddings are a business now-a-days, I get that, but even the government is getting involved in it. I’m getting married in Washington State. Here’s the breakdown into what I paid for so I could get a frigging piece of paper that says I can file jointly next year.

Notice how none of those costs are actually related to filing and processing my marriage certificate? That’s because all the paper pushing and work it takes to maintain all that is paid by the state; by taxes. Everyone in Washington (self-included) pays for that. I paid $64 just… because. Like just because all those other programs couldn’t get enough money in the first place. They’re good programs, deserving of funding, absolutely. I mean, who wouldn’t want to give just $5 for the Child Abuse Program. I mean, unless they’re the child abusers. Because, fuck those guys.

#4: It’s all about you… except it isn’t

The Perception

You’ve waited literally your entire life for this day. You have the person you love standing beside you taking vows you will (ideally) forever be faithful to.

The Reality

No, you haven’t waited your entire life and your parents, aunts, uncles, older brothers and sisters, grandparents and other family all waited longer. So get in line.

Think about it. Your parents want you to be happy and being married is one of those things that does that. Seriously. If they were a good family they’ve wanted this day for you longer than you were capable of even contemplating any future event, much less this one. You haven’t been waiting your entire life, you’ve just been wanting it for as long as you were capable OF wanting it.

Ever go to a first birthday party for your cousin or niece or something? The kid doesn’t know what’s going on. I mean, sure, everybody’s paying attention to him/her but that’s been literally every day of their life so far. They get toys but… yeah, same thing and at this point one in their cognitive development, one jumbo Lego block isn’t all that different from another and the box is FAR more exciting than Barbie’s Dream House ever was.

And if you think they know the difference between the $7 overalls you got from Target they’ve spit up on three times today and the $300 designer thing from some Hipster place in San Francisco made of all organic fibers, I’m going to drive to your home and punch you in the tits and/or nuts. Not out of hate or some anger management issue, but because you’ve gotten this far in life being that much of an idiot. You clearly need more negative reinforcement.

They have no idea about the special importance of that day other than there’s slightly more people around. And that will be forgotten about two seconds after they’re put down for a nap later that day.

So, why do we do that?

We do that because it’s not the kid celebrating its birthday. It’s the parents celebrating their child. “Look at this wonderful life I’ve made” and that’s TOTALLY OK TO SAY. It’s their day, not the kid’s.

Your wedding will be much the same. Yeah, sure, you want to celebrate your wedding and the beginning of your marriage with everyone you know, love, and cherish. And you should totally do just that. But the fact is, the friends and family who are there are celebrating in you just as much as you’re celebrating in this new relationship you’ve created. It’s just as important to keep that in mind.

But, after all that, it should be a good day. You’ll spend a little more than you wanted, eat a little more than you need, dance like an idiot and probably have a couple more drinks than you should but, really, what good day doesn’t end in at least one of those?
